Barbara Lennon Colwell, 87, of Abilene, passed away on Monday, January 20, 2025 at Hendrick Hospice Center.

She was born Barbara Darlyn Lennon in Harper, Texas on October 18, 1937, to Archie and Julia Lennon. After graduating high school, she moved to Austin and attended secretarial school. She first met James Colwell when he had a blind date with one of her roommates. The roommate cancelled at the last minute and Barbara went out with James instead. They were married on July 15, 1961, and were married for 55 years before James died in 2016.

Barbara and James lived in Austin for a few years after marrying, then moved to her family land in Harper. There, she served in various positions at Harper First Baptist Church and was a member of the Harper VFW Auxiliary. She enjoyed growing flowers and gardening. Her faith in God was an important aspect of her life. She faithfully gave to a number of Christian charities on a monthly basis.

She was fond of cats, almost never being without at least one. She volunteered with Meals on Wheels in Harper for several years.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, James; her parents, Archie and Julia Lennon; three sisters, Betty Joy Friedrich, Margie Russell, and Ruth Russell, and brother Virgil Lennon. She is survived by son David Colwell and his wife Betsy, and granddaughters Megan Colwell and Emily Colwell, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Burial will be in a private ceremony. No other service is planned at this time.

Memorials may be made to Hendrick Hospice in Abilene, or to the charity of your choice.
