James Phillip Black

September 29, 1950 — August 25, 2024

James Phillip Black, aged 73, passed away peacefully on August 25th 2024. Born on September 29, 1950, Phil grew up in Borger, Texas, where he graduated from Borger High School in 1969.

He then pursued higher education at Texas Tech University and earned his law degree from Texas Tech Law School in 1973.

Phil began his legal career as an Assistant District Attorney in Amarillo, Texas, serving from 1979 to 1981. In 1981, he returned to his hometown of Borger, where he established a law practice that he operated until 1994. He then moved to Abilene, Texas, where he built a successful law practice for over 30 years, providing legal assistance to countless individuals in the Abilene area. His day-to-day life was made successful through the support of his dedicated legal assistants, Kristine Cooper and Barbra Martinez.

Phil is survived by his beloved wife, Rose Black, his three sons: Zane Black, Selden Black, Joel Black, and his daughter-in-law Ryann Black. He also leaves behind five cherished grandchildren: Gabriel Bittner, Austin Black, Alyssa Black, Lexi Black, and lan Black.

An avid golfer, James was often seen driving down Antilley Road in his golf cart, with his golf clubs and fishing pole, heading to the Abilene Country Club to play golf with friends and cast a line in the nearby lake. Golf was his passion, and he treasured every opportunity to play with his sons, Zane and Joel, and his golf buddies. He also shared a love of Texas Tech sports with his oldest grandson, Austin.

James loved spending time with Selden and his family at their lake house, where they fished and watched his grandchildren, Lexi and Ian tubing behind the boat.

James is also survived by his sister, Julia Meiers, and his brother-in-law, Glen Meiers, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Maxine Black, and his two brothers, Joe Black and Larry Black.
