Paul Edward Allen, known to many as a "Gentle Giant," left this world on November 8, 2024, in his home in Abilene, Texas, just shy of his 85th birthday. Born on November 16, 1939, in the small town of Somerset, Colorado, Paul spent his early years amidst the rugged beauty of the Colorado mountains, where he honed skills as an avid hunter and fisherman—qualities that became the foundation for a life of adventure and leadership.
After graduating from Paonia High School in 1957, Paul embarked on an illustrious military career with the United States Air Force. For 27 years, he served his country with pride, earning a collection of commendation medals and awards including the AF Commendation Medal, AF Outstanding Unit Award, AF Good Conduct Medal, and the Vietnam Service Medal, to name a few. His journey began at Dyess AFB in Abilene, Texas, where fate smiled upon him as he met the love of his life, Barbara. Their romance was swift and sincere, leading to a marriage on October 31, 1961. Together, they celebrated 63 beautiful years filled with laughter, love, and cherished memories.
Paul is survived by his loving wife Barbara, and their three children: Jon, Lenard, and Tonya, as well as his brothers Ralph, Norman, and Kenneth. His parents, Ivan and Ester Allen, now welcome him into eternal peace.
Family and friends knew Paul as a man with a heart as large as his stature, someone ready to help without expecting anything in return. Whether sharing a laugh or imparting wisdom, Paul's presence was a constant source of comfort and joy.
We will gather at his home in Abilene to celebrate his life. Details on the date and time will be shared soon.
In the words of Paul that echo his gentle nature: "Death is nothing at all. It does not count. I have only slipped away into the next room. Nothing has happened. Speak of me in the easy way which you always used. Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together." We hold onto these words and smile, remembering him as the anchor of our family, always with us just around the corner. All is well.
